Eufy X10 Pro Omni is the best robot vacuum for most people. This self-empty robot vacuum and mop checks pretty much all our boxes. The suction power is excellent, pulling all kinds of debris, fluff and hair and fluff out of our tester's carpet (although it did flick larger debris about rather than sucking it up – a problem with almost all robovacs). It's relatively quiet in all but it's very highest vacuum setting, too.

But they’re also some of the largest and bulkiest of the vacuum types, especially compared with the sleeker and lighter stick, handheld, and robotic vacuums. According to our tests, the latter vacuums have improved in performance in recent years, but they’re generally better suited for smaller cleanups.

The Tipdiy G90 Combo delivers a comprehensive cleaning experience by combining robotic vacuuming and mopping in one device. This model offers a powerful 4200Pa suction system designed to handle dust, dirt, pet hair, and common household debris with ease.

Finally, there's the Freo X Plus, which is significantly cheaper and more basic than the others in the range. It has mopping capabilities but the dock is just a simple charge dock.

Not all robovacs can handle the extra challenge posed by lots of pet hair, but one that really impressed on this front was the Dreame L40 Ultra. This bot was put through its paces in a home filled with furry, four-legged friends, and really rose to the occasion.

The Combo is the first Roomba with a multifunction dock that can refill its mopping tank and self-wash its mopping pad, meaning less hands-on time for you. (The j9 Combo Plus has the same suction power and can refill its mopping tank but can’t wash the mop pad.

Most robovacs fling large debris about the room rather than vacuuming it up, so this is very impressive. Another area where many robovacs fail is on cleaning around the edges and into the corners of rooms. Again, the Freo X Ultra shines here: the side brushes get right up to the edges of rooms.

But a vacuum with at least 120 minutes of runtime (180 Top 3 Automatic Vacuum Cleaners is ideal) will clean the whole house in one go. If it takes too long, noisy robots that are constantly running will get shut off by annoyed family members who aren’t about to clean the room for you.

✅ You want something that mops well: The X10 Pro Omni's mops had pelo problem with tricky cleaning tasks like sticky sauces and dried-on sugary drinks.

Even if you have a smart robot vacuum, there is a risk it will end up stuck underneath a piece of furniture.

Great at vacuuming, and good at mopping although can sometimes spread wet spillages. Long battery life and fast charging.

The dock is also very compact for a self-empty model. The interior space is mostly given over to a larger-than-normal dust bag, which means you won't be bothered by the tiny onboard bin.
